With this device the 1ST POLISH ARMOURED DIVISION starts the liberation campaign in Western Europe in 1944.
Dutchmen you ask for the end of World War II will mention the Americans, the British and the Canadians as their liberators. The Poles are in largeness the fourth nationality who took part of the liberation of our country. This website will put on stage their contribution to our liberation. Beside the 1st Independent Polish Paratrouper Brigade, well known for their part of the battle of Arnhem, the 1st Polish Armoured Division under command of general Stanisław Maczek, also took a part in the liberation. The contribution of the 1st Polish Armoured Division in the Allied Powers success has been important. To create that image we follow the way the division covered from Normandy to Germany. The liberation of the south of the Netherlands will be described more detailed.

The Campaign

1. The formation of the 1st Polish Armoured Division in Scotland. (1942)
2. The landings in Normandy (1944), the liberation of Caen en the battles near Falaise.
3. The advance in France and Belgium whereby cities such as Abbeville, St. Omer, Ieper, Roeselarem Tielt, Gent, Lokeren, Sint Niklaas are liberated.




4. Liberarion of the east of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, western Noord-Brabant, including Axel, Hulst, Terneuzen, Baarle Nassau, Alphen, Breda, Geertruidenberg, Moerdijk. (October 1944)
5. The liberation of the north-east of the Netherlands with cities like Emmen, Ter Apel, Stadskanaal, Veendam, Winschoten.
6. Assault on Wilhelmshafen in Germany. On the 6th of May 1945 this city is occupied by the division.
